THE JOURNEY TO THE TOP
OF AN INSURANCE LAW ATTORNEY

“It took a lot of hard work and determination to get into law school and to keep up with the rigorous coursework,” says Frank N. Darras, the nation’s top insurance lawyer. Not only did he attend law school but he held a fulltime job selling medical equipment covering the 14 western states at the same time. “Traveling Sunday through Thursday and attending law school on Friday through Sunday taught me to be very organized and to use my time wisely.  Seeing the weak and disadvantaged disappointed by their insurers was difficult to watch but gave me a keen idea on what I wanted to do when I got out of law school,” says Darras.

Most laws school today offer a variety of insurance law courses. These elective courses cover the basics of insurance law with a review of prominent cases in all areas of insurance. Whichever side you want to support, corporate insurance or the policyholder, these courses will be greatly beneficial if this is the area you want to focus on. “The insurance industry is a huge multi-billion dollar market with plenty of room for great lawyers no matter which side you practice on,” says Darras. “It is a great environment to make a real difference in the law, disability law.”

Darras liked the big versus little; the weak versus strong; the challenge of taking on big insurance for the little guy.   Courses in insurance law would have been great, except they weren’t offered when he was in law school.
"Twenty years later, Frank N. Darras is famous for holding big insurance accountable and fixing corporate responsibility on behalf of the disable and the elderly. He has been a hero for the sick, the elderly and he really is a modern day, David fighting Goliath," says James A. Hayes, Jr., Assistant Dean of Academic Programs and Associate Professor at Western State University College of Law. See http://www.wsulaw.edu.
"Last month, at WSU, we held the first annual Frank N. Darras Disability Law Moot Court Competition, at the school's Fullerton campus. As far as we can tell, it is the only moot court competition in the country that focuses exclusively on disability law," says Hayes. "For tomorrow's lawyers to compete in this unique competition opens opportunities for their futures, but also for everyday Americans who buy insurance to protect them from the unthinkable."

“What an opportunity this competition gives law students. They get to explore what it’s really like and can determine first hand if this is the area they have a passion for,” says Darras “Our country could use more great lawyers standing up for the rights of the little guy.”
