The 2014-2015 NHL Season Promises Excitement for Fans, Frank N. Darras, Weighs In on the Importance of Disability Insurance for Players

Hockey lovers are excited as the new NHL season begins in earnest with the usual predictions along with a few injuries. Hockey has always been a rough sport, with emotions running high and opponents taking aim at each other. Disability insurance policies should be set by this time and in place to protect players if they are injured.

Beacher Report reports that some players are already on injured reserve such as David Krejci of the Boston Bruins due to an injury he suffered during a preseason game. At this point in time, he is expected to miss the first few games of the season but the team is hopeful regarding his impending return. According to SI.com, NHL players were being injured left and right, and that wasn’t even during the regular season: “Barely a week into NHL training camps and already quite a few players have suffered injuries that may keep them out for weeks. Add to that, the injuries already ailing guys like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, unknown issues that they suffered during the summer while preparing for camps, and you’ve got a nice roster of guys whose status going forward is unknown,” (Preseason Equals Injuries For Many NHL Players: Fansided, October 9, 2014).

“Even with the majority of NHL teams already seeing players on the injured reserves list, all of us fans should still expect some great opening games,” commentsFrank N. Darras, America’s top disability insurance lawyer. “Injuries are a fact of life when it comes to sports although it can be challenging to see our favorite players on the bench. I just hope these players will take their own safety into account as the season goes into full swing.”

When a player suffers from a career-ending injury, their disability insurance policy should be there to help cover them financially. Despite the cost of the policies, athletes should always purchase a policy from a reputable company so they can receive benefits as they heal from their injury. An own-occupation insurance rider is often a good addition so the former athlete can locate another job while still collecting benefits.

“I can never stress enough how important it is to protect yourself if you are an athlete or even if you are not a part of the sporting world. In hockey, fights can break out at a moments notice with players unaware of how a blow to the head can cause serious damage. Whether or not you are an athlete, talk with an expert to learn about how disability insurance can be there to protect your livelihood so that you and your family can continue to live in the way you are accustomed,” says Darras.
