Common individual disability claim questions

Many of our California readers have individual disability insurance. Many others are thinking about buying this type of policy, as they realize it could come in handy if they are ever disabled and unable to work.

While no two companies are the same when it comes to the process of filing a claim, the basics are often similar. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions among those in this position:

— When should I decide to file a claim? If you believe you are disabled for any reason, it is important to file a claim so it can be determined if you qualify for benefits.

— How long will it take for a decision to be made? This depends on many factors, including the company as well as the information pertaining to your situation. Most companies strive to move as quickly as possible, which allows them to make a decision within one to two months of receiving the necessary information.

— Is my information kept confidential or is it openly shared with others, such as my employer? All of the information you submit to your insurance company will be kept confidential, unless you authorize the insurer to discuss your situation with another party.

These are just some of the most common questions pertaining to making an individual disability insurance claim. You may have others that need answered if you find yourself making a claim and hoping to receive benefits in the near future.

In some cases, an insurance company will deny a claim. If this happens, a person has to go through the appeal process, which is sometimes easier with the help of a qualified attorney.
