Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

Insurance companies do not want to pay benefits. Unfortunately, some of the tactics they use to avoid paying benefits are not only questionable, but potentially dangerous. One of those tactics is the functional capacity evaluation (FCE).

What Is an FCE?

A functional capacity evaluation involves a series of tests to determine whether or not the insured is truly unable to perform his or her work duties. The FCE may include tests of strength and lifting ability, flexibility and coordination, endurance, cardiovascular fitness and more. These tests may or may not accurately reflect the insured’s line of work.

Why an FCE Could Be Dangerous

You are not working for a reason. Your medical condition is not imagined. It is real and painful. The last thing you want to do is undergo testing that could aggravate your condition or, in the worst-case scenario, set your recovery back by months or even years. Even if you successfully make your way through a functional capacity evaluation, this testing is often not entirely reliable. Your results can and will be used to deny your benefits.
